Luckily, making a marijuana smoothie is just about as easy as making a regular smoothie – and a whole lot more fun.
Why weed smoothies are a great idea
Most people have their preferred way to consume cannabis, and if you’re a joint fan or a blunt aficionado, then you may never see any reason to mix it up. But edibles have their own attractions, and it’s no surprise why they’re such a popular way to consume cannabis.
Edibles have a longer onset – around an hour or more before the high kicks in. However, the high from edibles can be a wholly unique experience, at times more intense than smoking, producing a long-lasting sensation that you can feel across your body, and which can also cause an acute case of the giggles.
In addition, edibles are a great option for people who can’t or don’t want to smoke. And that doesn’t have to be for medical reasons either. Picture this scenario – it’s a hot summer afternoon, you’re a bit parched, sunburnt, and tired, and don’t really feel like smoking a joint that will leave you with cottonmouth and even thirstier than before. But let’s say you decide to quench your thirst and get high at the same time with a perfectly-blended cannabis and fruit smoothie, and then float around the pool waiting for the THC to kick in? One could get used to that.
Some common edibles mistakes to avoid
But not everything is sunny and fruity in the land of edibles. Sometimes, you can end up getting a little too high and while that’s not always a bad thing, it can be an unpleasant experience.
The best way to avoid this is to simply take your time, especially if you’re trying out a certain type of edible for the first time. If you don’t know how strong the dose is, make sure to take your time. It can take well over an hour to two hours for the THC to kick in, so just take it slow, and give it at least an hour and a half to gauge the effects. With something as delicious as a smoothie, you may be tempted to have more than one, but this could end up leaving you more intoxicated than you bargained for, which may not be the result you’re looking for.
Always remember to decarboxylate
Decarboxylation is a chemical process in which cannabis is heated up, converting the cannabinoid THCA to THC. This process makes it possible for the cannabis to get you high when eaten, and if you’re smoking it happens virtually simultaneously as the flame hits the herb.
If you’re making edibles though, you have to take matters into your own hands, but luckily this is quite easy.
All you need to do is grind up some cannabis and bake it on a sheet in the oven for about 30-45 minutes at around 220-245°F (105-120°C). Take a look every 10 minutes or so to make sure it isn’t scorched and that’s about it really.
You now have decarboxylated weed that you can freely use to make edibles.
How to make cannabis coconut oil
For countless edibles recipes, a key step is to first infuse a fat with cannabis. This can be butter, also known as “cannabis butter,” or an infused oil like olive oil or coconut oil. Most cannabis lip balms (and cannabis salves) also use cannabis-infused coconut oil as a central component in the base.
For cannabis smoothies, a batch of infused coconut oil should work best. Here’s how to make your own:

After about three hours, remove from heat and after it has cooled, strain the oil through a cheesecloth into a container. Always make sure to give the cheesecloth a few extra squeezes at the end to make sure you got all the oil out.
How to make a cannabis smoothie
There are several different ways to make a weed smoothie, and none of them should give you too much trouble. In each case, you would basically make a smoothie like you would otherwise while substituting in a cannabis-infused ingredient like cannabis milk, cannabis sugar, cannabis honey, or cannabis-infused coconut oil.

To make using cannabis honey, simply substitute cannabis honey for the 2 teaspoons of honey, or use one teaspoon cannabis honey and one teaspoon regular honey if you want a milder batch.

How much is too much with edibles?
When it comes to dosing cannabis, edibles can be a bit tricky. The potency can depend on a wide variety of factors including your own tolerance, the strength of the cannabis you used, and how long or how well you infused it. Obviously, the amount you use in the recipe is key to the whole equation.
Some quick math can give us some tips though.
For instance, with cannabis sugar, if you used 3 grams of a strain with 20% THC, then you should have about 12.5mg of THC per teaspoon. Considering that a mild or moderate dose in an edible is about 5mg, this is a pretty significant amount in a single teaspoon. Or take cannabis oil, if you’re using the above recipe with ¼ ounce of 14% THC cannabis, then each teaspoon should have about 20mg of THC.
This is not an exact science though, and every batch of edibles can vary, just like every individual’s tolerance is not entirely the same.
Your best bet is to start low and go slow, using a dose that is a bit on the lighter side until you can accurately gauge the effects. The worst thing that can happen is that you’ll have a delicious smoothie and a mild buzz.
